Our Motorcycle Camping Trip in West Virginia (October 2011)
Plan A: We planned on taking a quick motorcycle camping trip from DC to Shenandoah National Park during peak fall foliage season. Well, it turns out that Shenandoah's fall foliage is pretty popular during the autumn months! They have 4 campgrounds and 2 lodges, and everything was sold out.
Plan B: The park ranger offered us a list of nearby campgrounds. We called the nearest campground, about 10 miles away, and they were booked.
Plan C: We called another campground in the area. They were booked!
Plan D: We called a third campground in the area. They had one spot left - but they were located almost an hour away and couldn't guarantee that they could save the last (aka. worst) camping spot for us.
Plan E: We planned on driving to the Emery family cabin in West Virginia, about an hour northwest of Shenandoah. Forget tent camping, we'd just stay in the cabin with a roaring fireplace instead! And flush toilets! And electricity! And running water! And a cozy bed! And a refrigerator! This was starting to sound like a great plan.
Plan F: Alex didn't have the key to the family cabin with him... oops! Instead of turning around and heading back home, we decided to camp on the family's land near the cabin. No cabin, no fireplace, no flush toilets, no electricity, no running water, no refrigerator.
What an adventure!
